Lightning Policy

Outdoor activity must be suspended when lightning is a maximum of seven (7) miles away. This is because lightning can strike up to six miles from the base of the thunderstorm.

SUSPENSION OF PLAY
During inclement weather, a director or lead coach at the facility will monitor lightning strikes manually and also via a mobile weather app. Any indication of lightning within a 7 mile radius will call for a suspension of all soccer sessions at that facility.

BE PROACTIVE
Indecisiveness creates a life-threatening situation. Lightning should be monitored with the first flash of lightning or clap of thunder, no matter how far away the storm is. It is critical to monitor how far away the lightning is occurring and how fast the storm is approaching relative to the distance of a safe shelter. If play is suspended, all individuals, including athletes, coaches, referees, and spectators, should immediately go indoors or to their cars to wait for the storm to pass.

SAFE STRUCTURES
A safe structure or location is defined as: 1) any building normally occupied or frequently used by people (i.e., a building with plumbing and/or electrical wiring that acts to electrically ground the structure). Avoid using shower facilities for safe shelter during a thunderstorm; and 2) in
the absence of a sturdy, frequently inhabited building, any vehicle with a hard metal roof (not a convertible or golf cart) and rolled up windows can provide a measure of safety. It is not the rubber tires that make a vehicle a safe shelter; rather, it is the hard metal roof that dissipates the lightning strike around the vehicle.

RESUMPTION OF PLAY
For resumption, follow the 30-minute rule: Play should not be resumed until 30 minutes have passed since the last flash of lightning within the 7 mile radius.
